Concern

Mankato, MN, Letter Carrier Daryl Steffen became concerned when he observed mail piling up in an elderly customer’s mailbox. Looking through the window, he saw her lying on the floor and heard her crying for help. Steffen called 911 and waited until rescue personnel arrived. The woman was taken to the emergency room. Fortunately, she had not suffered any major injuries.

Great Guy

While delivering mail recently, South Salt Lake, UT, Letter Carrier Paul Pickett found a woman on her porch suffering from pneumonia. Pickett called 911 and kept the woman comfortable until the ambulance arrived. The emergency medical team and the doctor at the hospital said that without Pickett’s quick action, the woman most likely would have died. “It’s just the sort of thing you’d expect from Paul. He’s a great guy,” said Customer Services Supervisor David Fitzjarrell.

Above and Beyond

Cleveland, OH, West Park Station Letter Carrier Ray Petrosky thought a customer was just on the ground working on his car door — until he heard the man cry out for help. The customer’s leg was broken. Petrosky asked a nearby business owner to call 911 and waited with the man until emergency personnel arrived. “You certainly went above and beyond the call of being a letter carrier,” the man said in a letter to Petrosky. “I can’t thank you enough.”

Right place Right Time... Again

East Aurora, NY, Letter Carrier Scott Pomana was delivering his route when he noticed a house on fire. Pomana first called 911 and then went to the home to see if anyone needed help. The woman who lives there was wheel-chair bound, so he helped her husband get her safely evacuated. “I was just happy to be at the right place at the right time,” said Pomana.

Superman Does Super Help

Kansas City, MO, Letter Carrier Matt Thomas was loading mail into his vehicle when eight young men began attacking a homeless man in the street behind the Post Office. Thomas ran to the man’s aid. As soon as he did, the attackers fled.

Car Gone Wild

Chippewa Lake, OH, Rural Carrier Konnie Young had just finished delivering mail and was about to pull away when the horn on the car in the customer’s driveway began to honk and the emergency lights started blinking.

Young investigated and found the woman inside the car having difficulty breathing. Young ran into the customer’s home and notified the woman’s husband, who then quickly drove her to the hospital.

“I’m so glad she was there,” the customer said.

Hearing a Yell

Willard, NC, Rural Carrier Associate Patricia Merritt was delivering her route when she heard a faint cry for help. She discovered an elderly customer had fallen into a ditch in front of her house. Merritt helped the woman into her home. Merritt is credited with saving the customer’s life.

Give Life Back To baby

Altus, OK, Retail Associate Shirley Worrell didn’t panic when a young mother raced into the Post Office pleading for help because her two-week old baby had stopped breathing. Worrell asked a co-worker to call 911 and immediately began performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the infant and continued until paramedics arrived. Her efforts paid off as the infant gasped and then started to cry while she was carrying him to the ambulance. “It was the sweetest cry I ever heard,” said Worrell.



Her quick response and first aid knowledge saved the baby’s life. “We’ve got a genuine hero here,” said Postmaster Mike Engle.
